Travelling by train in India is a sight, sound, and story-filled experience, and one which is inevitably usually accompanied by pangs of hunger. Platform vendors and pantry cars have been the usual favourites for quite some time now, but a more convenient and cleaner option is now taking centre stage: Food Delivery at Railway Station

Either alone or accompanied by family, restaurant-style food delivered to your seat is now more convenient than ever. But before we start, here are some things you should know to make your experience smooth and fulfilling.

1. Check Station Eligibility and Train Schedule

Not every railway station offers food delivery. Major junctions such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Howrah, and Ahmedabad are usually served, but smaller stations may not be. Check beforehand that the delivery facility is present in your destination station before ordering food from the railway station. Most of the food ordering apps permit you to check this by providing your PNR number or train number.

Also, check the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) at the station. Trains arriving late can cause delays or even cancellations in food delivery if nearby shops close when your train arrives.

2. Choose Trusted Apps and Vendors

With a number of platforms offering food delivery at railway stations, it becomes important to opt for a reliable one. IRCTC eCatering, RailRestro, Zoop, and even Zomato (on some routes) are a few of the best service providers. They tie up with FSSAI-approved restaurants, hence adhering to food safety and hygiene procedures.

Check customer ratings and reviews prior to choosing a vendor. That provides a good idea of food quality, delivery time, and packaging standards.

3. Place Order Well in Advance

Timing is of the essence when you order food at railway station. Although all food services accept last-minute orders (30–60 minutes before the station), it would be preferable to order 2 hours in advance. This will provide sufficient time for the restaurant and delivery partner to prepare and coordinate with your train arrival.

Also, have your phone charged and in-network coverage because the delivery agents will call to validate your coach and seat number.

4. Customisations and Dietary Needs

The majority of the websites enable you to personalise your food. Whether you are a veggie, on a Jain diet, or dislike oily food, there is generally something for everyone. Provide specific guidelines to prevent confusion.

Accompanying children or older people? Opt for light, gentle food or regional street food that can be easily digested on the go.

5. Safe and Cashless Payments

All apps support more than one payment option—UPI, credit/debit card, net banking, or cash on delivery. Cashless payment is preferred, though, as it minimises touchpoints and hastens the process.

Ensure that you receive a confirmation message or order status notification. You should also have a screenshot or order number in case of any delivery issues.

Final Thoughts

The exercise of ordering food on board while travelling by train is not a gamble anymore. With food delivery at railway station, you can relish clean, fresh, and hygienic food delivered right to your seat. You just need to plan a bit ahead of time, find a good vendor, and be on the lookout for delivery. Your next train trip can also be as delicious as it is beautiful!
